Use in a Wide Range of Applications

SMART MANUFACTURING

One of the most ground-breaking disruptions of Industry 4.0 is the emerging field of smart manufacturing, particularly in the automotive industry. Some key advantages of EchoRing-enabled smart manufacturing include:

Significantly lower hardware and operational costs; easy integration of new units, fewer cables and components subject to wear and tear and wireless central edge computing allow for excellent system optimization, resulting in less unplanned downtime, fewer maintenance cycles and lower idle costs

Easy installation; wireless robotics platforms have low infrastructure requirements – many smart manufacturing floors are simply flat industrial spaces for robots to operate in

Simpler and more robust engineering; wireless communications reduce the number of wires and cables within each robot, particularly in malfunction-prone joints and moving parts

Dynamic and flexible production models; untethered, wireless robots allow entire production floorplans to be reconfigured at will, which means a single smart factory can assemble several wildly different products within a day

HUMAN-MACHINE INTERFACES (HMIs)

The goal of HMIs is to maximize communication efficiency between human controllers and machinery. Most industrial accidents are caused by a breakdown in this communication, therefore it’s in any mechanical industry’s best interest to create layers of real-time safeguards and redundancies:

Improved workflow and accuracy; a mechanical system controlled through a single wireless smart device rather than several wired units improves user experience (UX), versatility and functionality and reduces the chance of error

Ease of retrofit; EchoRing integrates easily into existing hardware and software stacks thanks to its omni-compatibility with standard industrial protocols

Enhanced productivity; EchoRing-enabled wireless HMIs raise the bar for operational flexibility and optimization – new efficiencies and workplace safety protocols can be discovered and developed from the vantage point of a single interface controlling an entire mechanical system

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs)

AGVs zipping along in perfect harmony are an iconic image of Industry 4.0, yet several stumbling blocks remain in the way of wide adoption. EchoRing rectifies many of the hurdles small, medium and process-entrenched businesses face when adopting AGVs into their business model:

Optimal reliability and safety; as explained in our Basics of EchoRing page, EchoRing is a decentralized real-time network that employs an ultra-reliable “buddy” system for exchanging information packets – this makes it ideal for both AGV platooning and wireless e-stop features

Low start-up costs; standard hardware compatibility without the need for fixed infrastructure makes EchoRing the optimal solution for AGV network communications

Scalability; new AGV units of various types can be added to an EchoRing network with ease as operations evolve

AEROSPACE

Few industries are more concerned with reducing weight, increasing reliability and simplifying engineering than aerospace. EchoRing in this regard provides a wireless intra-system communications alternative to wired onboard controls, resulting in:

Higher production throughput; fewer cable and wire installations allow aircraft/spacecraft to be produced at a faster rate

Lower fuel consumption; total weight is reduced, thus reducing both fuel consumption and C02 emissions

Faster maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO); troubleshooting errors or installing upgrades in a wired system can be very time-consuming and complex – a process EchoRing greatly streamlines

Improved engineering; a reduced number cables and wires enables innovative new engineering layouts that were previously impossible, increasing available weight and square meterage for passengers, cargo and crew – this is especially important in space applications (i.e. rocket stage release controls)
